Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have donated $1.5 million for the construction of the first public school on the north shore of Kauai, just a mile away from their luxury estate worth $270 million...
The new school, named Namahana School, will span 11 acres in Kilauea and is set to open its doors by the end of next year. The donation includes $750,000 in cash and $800,000 worth of state-of-the-art mobile units. These units will provide functional spaces while permanent infrastructure is under construction. The school will address a long-standing issue for students who previously had to travel up to three hours a day to attend school in remote parts of the island.
Melani Parker, executive director of the Namahana Education Foundation, said, "Priscilla's experience in education has brought a deep understanding of the complexity of this endeavor. We are grateful to Mark and Priscilla for their support." The school will follow an aina-based approach to learning, inspired by the traditions and culture of Native Hawaiians, with the global aim of becoming a model of sustainable education. The first class of high school students will begin their education in January 2025, with plans to add one grade per year.
Zuckerberg's estate on Kauai, known as Koolau Ranch, spans 550 acres, equivalent to 980 football fields. With a budget of $270 million, this monumental property includes two villas with 30 bedrooms, 11 treehouses connected by bridges, pools, saunas, and a 500-square-meter underground bunker.
The bunker is a true symbol of security and luxury – soundproof, equipped with a library, living room, and an emergency exit. The entire complex reflects Zuckerberg’s passion for surfing, running, and MMA, combining adventurous spirit with technological grandeur.
Mark Zuckerberg continues to balance extravagant luxury with philanthropic engagement. While his estate redefines the standards of private residences, his contribution to Kauai and the local community represents a valuable investment in future generations. With Namahana School, Kauai's north shore is set for transformation, and Zuckerberg leaves a lasting mark on the island he calls home.
