A custom-made apartment situated in the renowned River House building in New York is on sale for $5 million…
Designed by John Saladino in the 1980s and later refreshed by Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, this elegant duplex offers impressive views of the East River. In the early 1980s, after the death of her husband, Andrew Eu, the director of Hong Kong Television Broadcasts, art and fashion enthusiast Sandra Eu purchased a duplex apartment in an exclusive art deco-style building in Manhattan, named River House, which has always been a favourite among celebrities such as Henry Kissinger and Uma Thurman.
Sandra chose this apartment for its beautiful light and tranquil river view, according to a 2006 article in Met Home magazine, and then embarked on an extensive renovation of the space in collaboration with interior designer John Saladino. Several years later, she hired Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz from BNO Design studio to refresh the interior, and now this stylish apartment is on the market for just under $5 million - significantly less than the nearly $6 million asked for in 2022.
Located on the sixth and seventh floors of the 1931 building designed by Bottomley, Wagner, and White, on an isolated cul-de-sac at East 52nd Street - described as a "rare opportunity to create something truly befitting the legend that is River House" by listing agent Loy Carlos of NestSeekers International - the apartment features four bedrooms and five bathrooms in 5,500 square feet of living space accessible by elevator on both floors, with light hardwood floors, high ceilings, neoclassical floor and wall mouldings, built-in closets, and sliding doors throughout.
Key features include an entry hall with a sweeping staircase leading to a spacious living room with a wood-burning fireplace and a window offering unobstructed river views. There's also a dining room, a library/living room, an office, a powder room, and a kitchen with a small dining island, top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances, a breakfast nook, and a pantry, as well as a laundry room and two staff rooms sharing a bathroom.
On the upper floor, the primary bedroom is equipped with a private office and a balcony overlooking scenic landscapes, as well as a spacious walk-in closet and a bathroom with a shower and a marble bathtub; this floor also houses two additional bedrooms with their own walk-in closets and bathrooms, as well as a back staircase leading to the service area.
The apartment comes with a high monthly maintenance fee of $17,495 and includes a doorman, concierge, building manager, and the privilege of gaining access to the adjacent private River Club, which offers a sports club with a pool, tennis and squash courts, a gym, and a restaurant.
