Nestled in the heart of a lush natural landscape, La Villa Luce is a perfect fusion of contemporary design and traditional Quebec architecture…

Designed by MXMA Architecture & Design, this stunning residence sits atop La Malbaie in Canada, offering breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and the Charlevoix Mountains. Inspired by the region’s rich heritage and natural surroundings, the house exudes both warmth and elegance.

A Retreat in Nature, Designed for Light

The homeowner envisioned a serene sanctuary, far from the city's hustle, where she could be fully immersed in nature. This vision gave rise to La Villa Luce, a name reflecting both her Italian roots and deep connection to light. Strategically oriented east to west, the house maximizes daylight exposure and panoramic views, ensuring a dynamic interplay between light and architecture.

With a commitment to preserving the environment, the architects ensured minimal deforestation, seamlessly integrating the home into its natural surroundings. Wood and stone structures follow the contours of the land, fostering a harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature. Two monolithic stone walls symbolize the home’s strong connection to the land, while the glass-encased upper level introduces an element of lightness and transparency.

A Home Defined by Light and Spatial Flow

The living spaces are strategically positioned on the upper floor to fully embrace natural light and sweeping vistas. Expansive windows and strategically placed terraces flood the interior with daylight, making light a defining feature of the home.

At the heart of the space sits a billiard table, serving not only as a leisure element but also as a social anchor around which family life revolves. The kitchen and dining area bask in the morning sun, while the living room and fireplace are illuminated by the golden hues of sunset. This symmetrical spatial arrangement enhances both aesthetic balance and functional harmony.

Two expansive terraces extend from opposite sides of the home, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Thanks to a meticulously designed transition, the boundaries between architecture and nature dissolve – glass railings are subtly integrated into the terrace flooring, reinforcing an uninterrupted connection with the landscape.

A Private Retreat in the Forest

The bedrooms, nestled on the ground floor, offer tranquility and seclusion, surrounded by the serene forest. The master suite features a sculptural bathtub positioned next to a panoramic window, allowing residents to indulge in the silence of nature.

At the core of the house lies a striking architectural module, painted forest green, serving as the structural and visual backbone of the home. This central volume unites the two floors and various spaces while discreetly concealing functional areas, including the laundry room, storage, and bathrooms, ensuring a clutter-free and seamless living experience.

Sustainability and Eco-Conscious Design

La Villa Luce was designed with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility. Key sustainable features include:

  • Minimal land disruption – Vegetation was carefully preserved to maintain the natural ecosystem.
  • Locally sourced materials – The facade is built from regional stone, while the wooden structure is sourced from sustainably managed forests.
  • Passive solar optimization – The home is oriented to maximize winter solar gain while roof overhangs limit summer heat, reducing energy consumption.
  • Novoclimat-certified efficiency – High-performance insulation and energy-efficient materials reduce the need for heating and cooling, ensuring sustainability without compromising comfort.

A Perfect Balance of Design and Nature

La Villa Luce is a masterpiece of architectural precision, seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings. It stands as a testament to how architecture can shape a way of life, creating a haven where light, nature, and space exist in perfect synergy.
