In the heart of Gandhinagar, India, lies the architectural masterpiece Nine X Nine, a project that merges innovative design and sustainability…
Designed by the renowned firm Sanjay Puri Architects, this residence exemplifies modern architecture that seamlessly integrates natural elements to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically flawless, harmonizing with its surroundings.
A Seamless Integration of Architecture and Nature
Through bold volumetric play and fluid forms, the house naturally adapts to the terrain and environment. On the southern side of the 3,311 m² plot, nine existing trees were preserved, with two of them integrated into spacious open terraces, while the others surround the structure, creating a harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature.
Access to the property is situated between a dense cluster of trees in the northwestern corner, creating a gradual reveal of the home upon entry. Smart spatial planning shapes the house into a T-formation, with a central axis branching east and west, while a spiral staircase in the center enhances the space’s dynamism. The structure spans three levels—the ground floor as the main entry level, the upper floor housing private rooms, and a subterranean level dedicated to recreation and art.
A sunken courtyard on the western side adds natural light and ventilation to the underground level. This green oasis connects to the garden via an open staircase along a curved wall with a cascading waterfall, while a shallow reflecting pool in the northeastern section aids in passive cooling. A total of six trees have been preserved within the courtyard, while three more remain intact in the southeastern part of the estate.
Thoughtful Spatial Design & Sustainable Solutions
The ground level features expansive communal areas, including the living room, dining area, kitchen, and guest suite, while three primary bedrooms occupy the upper floor, each offering views of the garden and trees. The underground level serves as an entertainment space and art gallery, reflecting the owner's deep passion for art.
All interior spaces open onto spacious cantilevered terraces, combining covered and open segments to accommodate various weather conditions. Deep overhangs and strategically placed openings provide ample shade, reducing the need for air conditioning, even during scorching summers when temperatures soar up to 50°C.
The interior embraces minimalism, featuring white marble flooring, wooden furnishings, and subtle accents, while sustainability is evident in the use of natural materials, water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and optimized natural lighting. Thanks to its smart design, Nine X Nine operates without air conditioning for most of the year, significantly reducing the home’s energy footprint.
