The world of hypercars is known for pushing the boundaries of design and engineering, but the Pagani Utopia Roadster takes it a step further...
This open-top hypercar is not only a performance indicator but also a tribute to supreme craftsmanship and aesthetics. The $3.6 million price tag may sound astronomical, but every detail of this car justifies the cost, even when it comes to seemingly trivial parts like screws.
In the Pagani Utopia Roadster, even the screws are masterpieces. Made from Grade 7 titanium, each screw bears the company logo and the vehicle’s chassis serial number. The cost of a single screw is approximately 80 euros (around $86), and the Roadster uses around 1000 screws, meaning these details alone cost $86,000.
For comparison, traditional steel screws for similar applications cost a few hundred dollars. However, titanium is not just an aesthetic choice; its lightness and strength are key for reducing the car's weight and supporting the 863 horsepower delivered by its 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine.
The same titanium is used in one of today’s most advanced airplanes, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. While the F-35 uses 48,000 titanium screws, the price per piece is only $5, as their focus is on functionality rather than exclusivity. The total cost of screws for one F-35 is about $240,000, which is a negligible amount compared to the plane’s price tag of $80 to $100 million per unit.
Revealed in July 2024, the Pagani Utopia Roadster represents the pinnacle of Pagani craftsmanship. Although it features a retractable roof mechanism, the car’s weight without fluids is 1,400 kilograms, the same as the coupe version. It is powered by a Mercedes-AMG twin-turbo V12 engine, which produces 852 horsepower and allows for a top speed of 350 km/h (electronically limited).
Only 130 units of this hypercar will be produced, further increasing its exclusivity. The $3.6 million price is just the starting point, as additional custom options, such as moonstone paint, can significantly increase the total cost.
Whether it’s the titanium screws, the Mercedes-AMG engine, or the incomparable design, the Pagani Utopia Roadster confirms Horacio Pagani as an artist of the automotive industry. This is a car that is not only built for speed but also for admiration – the perfect blend of technology, performance, and artistic vision.
