Situated on the island of Folegandros in Greece, Gundari Resort, designed by Block722, is envisioned to harmonize with its precious, untouched surroundings.
This small Aegean island showcases the natural beauty of its archipelago, defined by dramatic rocky hills, low Mediterranean vegetation, and the endless blue of the sea, making it a perfect contemplative retreat. Gundari is designed to seamlessly blend into this context—not only in its physical manifestation, with minimalist volumes and material choices, but also in perfect synchronization with the island's slow-paced lifestyle, offering guests the luxury of time, mindfulness, and relaxation.
The client's brief defined an eco-friendly resort, a hospitality complex fully in tune with its environment, with a light footprint that respects the stunning landscape and the cultural heritage of the Cyclades. In response, Block722, led by founders Sotiris Tsergas and Katja Margaritoglou, crafted architecture that marries tranquility with a gentle sense of adventure, creating the perfect getaway. At the same time, everything is curated to reflect the visual and cultural language of the island—from the colors inspired by the surrounding sea and rocky outcrops to the anchoring effect of the materials and the overall composition reminiscent of historical formations of Aegean villages.
Set on a vast clifftop site, Gundari is shaped like a family of low structures, spread across the plot. Within the complex, a series of suites is nestled into the gently undulating terrain, all oriented to offer panoramic views of the water. To achieve this, the complex is organized around two parts. One is nearly invisible, embedded in the ground with green roofs; the other, though above ground, remains low and discreet. Between them, the main resort building, housing the reception and common facilities, is situated slightly higher, subtly signaling its presence to guests, drawing on imagery of a country home standing out in the main square of an archetypal Greek village. From this point, through the arrangement of volumes that guide the gaze towards the horizon, the infinity pool merges with the colors of the Aegean Sea, immersing visitors in its blue backdrop. Walking through the complex and exploring its views of island life becomes an organic part of living at Gundari.
Designed in Block722’s signature warm minimalism, which importantly also resonates with Cycladic architectural traditions, the resort is simple and restrained. Yet, it is rich in conceptual layers and physical textures, with a palette composed entirely of natural materials and colors. Marble, wood, and clay play key roles in the interiors and exteriors, while much of the natural stone and gravel used in the resort was recycled from the site, ensuring a gentle circularity in its construction. In this way, both conceptually and physically, the spaces, clad in earthy tones like soft beige and warm gray, create an inviting, subtly luxurious, and respectful environment. Handpicked art, ceramics, and music complement and enhance this sense of tranquility throughout the resort. Meanwhile, custom-built fitted and freestanding furniture pieces designed by Block722 complete the design, mixed with vintage finds.
Carefully planned construction over five years ensured that all equipment, skilled workers, and materials that had to be brought in from neighboring islands or the mainland were transported with great respect for nature. This ensured minimal impact on the landscape, further strengthening the thoughtful nature of this design-driven, eco-conscious resort.
Gundari Resort thrives in its wild context, fully embracing the drama and character of its secluded location—despite the challenges posed by its remote setting.
