At the Geneva Watch Days event, Russian independent watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin captured attention with the unveiling of the ThinKing prototype, considered the world’s thinnest mechanical wristwatch at just 1.65 mm thick...

This groundbreaking timepiece surpasses the Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari model, which measures 1.75 mm in thickness, setting a new benchmark in the world of ultra-thin watches.

The ThinKing prototype is not only remarkable for its ultra-thin design but also for its innovative features and playful aesthetic. Inspired by the Wristmon collection, the dial presents a face-like appearance, with the hour and minute displays resembling eyes, while the engraved brand name on the front of the case forms a smile. The case, made from heat-treated high-hardness stainless steel, measures 40 mm and weighs only 13.3 grams without its strap.

The ThinKing is packed with technological innovations, including the new K.23-0 movement, which is directly integrated into the case, eliminating the need for additional space. The manually wound movement features a Swiss lever escapement system, an ultra-thin winding barrel, and a double balance system with a geared clutch. This technical design allows the watch to be thinner than an American penny.

To enhance durability given its delicate structure, Konstantin Chaykin developed an alligator leather strap with elastic inserts and titanium supports to withstand wear stress. Additionally, the watch includes the Case-PalanKing, a special protective case that attaches to the back of the watch, serving as both a protector and an automatic winder. Even with the case attached, the total thickness remains an impressive 5.4 mm.

The development of the ThinKing prototype led to the filing of three patents, covering the winding barrel, double balance wheel, and strap design, underscoring the technical challenges and solutions involved in creating such an ultra-thin watch.

Although pricing and availability details have not yet been released, this prototype marks a significant milestone in watchmaking, pushing the boundaries of mechanical design with a combination of advanced engineering and unique aesthetics. The ThinKing was a standout piece at this year’s Geneva Watch Days, signaling exciting developments in the race for the ultimate ultra-thin watch.
